The Oil Spill Distress Helpline was designed to provide information, support and counseling to families and children who are experiencing distress symptoms as a result of this disaster. Crisis Intervention of Houston, Inc. has been appointed the official call center for Oil Spill Distress Helpline calls in Texas. In partnership with the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (NSPL), the Oil Spill Distress Helpline is part of the Obama Administration's long-term oil spill recovery plan. The helpline is free, completely confidential, bilingual, operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week and links callers to behavioral healthcare services. Dedicated, trained, non-judgmental phone counselors answer each call with the goal of reducing initial distress and fostering short and long-term adaptive functioning by providing callers with resources based on their needs.
